How Wooden Statues Are Made: Step-by-Step Wood Carving Process

Creating wooden statues is a traditional art that requires skill, patience, and high-quality timber. Here is a step-by-step overview of how our wooden carvings are made.

How Wooden Statues Are Made:

  1. Cutting and Shaping the Wood
The process begins by cutting the timber into manageable pieces using a cutting machine. The wood is then shaped into a basic sculptural form. At this stage, only the general outline is created to make the detailing process easier.
  2. Preparing the Tools
A wooden hammer and a set of Balinese chisels are essential tools. Chisels come in various shapes such as concave, straight, and pointed. The size and type of chisel used depend on the carving details required.
  3. Detailed Carving
The artisan carefully carves the wood according to the desired design. Beginners usually start with simple shapes before moving on to more complex designs such as floral patterns or traditional Balinese motifs.
  4. Sanding and Smoothing
Once the carving is complete, the sculpture is sanded using sandpaper or a sanding machine. This step smooths the surface and enhances the final appearance of the statue.
  5. Finishing and Polishing
The final step is applying wooden wax or polish to enhance the natural color of the timber. After drying, the sculpture is brushed until it achieves a beautiful shine.

With practice and dedication, anyone can learn the basics of wood carving. However, mastering the art requires years of experience and passion.
